This weekend has been one of the best ones in a while. Why you ask? Well, someone special came to visit…

The last couple of weeks have been rough for me, for a multitude of reasons, but one of the best things that really cheered me up was the fact that someone special came to visit – my mom!

She’s been wanting to come visit me in Chicago for a while, so I’m so glad that she’s been able to make the trip out. This woman drove 13 hours after a huge snowstorm in New England to come visit and spend some time with me. She’s pretty much a superhero. One of her many superpowers is impeccable timing.

While she’s been in town, it’s been nice to be able to show her around my Chicago neighborhood, Logan Square, as well as some other neighborhoods that she hasn’t ever gotten to see before.  We were able to check out a lot of great places that I haven’t made it to yet either.

On one day, my mom and I went to this place called Village Tap located over in Roscoe Village. We each got a beer and decided to split this open-faced Portobello sandwich. I’m relatively new to enjoying mushrooms, but guys, this sandwich was so delicious – I recommend you head over there and get it for yourself. It was topped with a bed of greens and pickled onions and paired with french fries. You really can’t get better than that.

The next day, we went to go to Logan Theater (pictured above) and saw SPLIT, which was an awesome thriller movie. Finally, after the movie, we went just down the street to grab a glass of wine at Webster Wine Bar. This place has such a great, relaxed vibe and was the perfect way to end the night.  If you couldn’t tell, my mom and I love a great glass of wine or beer paired with delicious food. :p

Besides checking out some awesome places, one of my favorite things to do with my mom is cook. We love being able to come up with new recipes or try something new out of a cookbook. For lunch one day, we ended up making burgers, but tried to do it as healthy as possible.

We made hamburgers with goat cheese melted over the top, topped with onions, sautéed spinach, and green peppers. For a side, we made roasted sweet potatoes. We made the burger without a bun to save on the carbs, but honestly – it was so delicious – you didn’t miss it.

Even though my mom is in town, she goes to bed on the early side. So each night once she went to bed, I decided to go out with some friends.

Friday night was a night out with college friends. My friend invited us out to bottle service at The Public House in The Loop, which was something I’ve never done before. It was definitely a treat having endless amounts of Vodka and mixers coming to your table. That’ll probably never happen again, but was such an awesome experience.

Saturday night, Mike and I decided to go to another concert.

The artist we saw was Michael Ray, who is an up and coming country singer. We were able to get up pretty close to the stage and wow, he puts on quite a show.  It kind of had a fun rock sound as well, which I wasn’t totally expecting. The energy that he and his band had on stage made it so fun to watch, even if you don’t know all the lyrics. I’d love to see him in concert again. His opener, Levi Hummon, was also pretty great. I’ve seen him before when he opened up for Kelsea Ballerini and both times I feel like he was able to connect with the crowd really well. There’s something about country concerts that are just so different from other genres. It’s not the dancing, or the beer, but maybe just the ability to connect lyrically.

Well, that’s all for now. Here’s hoping to a great Valentine’s Day & week to come! <3
